Why Dignity Matters

When it comes to human dignity, we can not make compromises.

Angela Merkel

Dignity is a human need, like a roof over our heads, food or social contact. It touches all aspects of our lives – from the closest family circle, to connections with our work and the state, to our connection with our planet and its elements.

Dignity matters. Every morning when we look at ourselves in the mirror. Dignity determines. Whether we can accept ourselves with all our faults or whether we feel weak and inferior.

Dignity matters. when we talk to our neighbours. Dignity decides. Whether we treat them with respect and love or whether we distrust them.

Dignity matters. On the way to work. Dignity determines. Whether we see our performance as an important part of a larger whole or whether we feel mistreated by colleagues and superiors.

Dignity matters. When we go for a walk in the woods. Dignity decides. Whether we touch a tree and its blossoms with gratitude and rejoice that it is part of the cycle of life, or whether we simply walk past it and carelessly stub out a cigarette at its roots.

Dignity is like a drop of water, transparent, inconspicuous at first glance, something that evaporates too quickly in everyday life, but an incredibly important detail in our lives and in our connections with others.
